Poultry Production
and Value 2016 Summary
The combined value of production from broilers, eggs, turkeys, and the value of sales from chickens in 2016 was $38.7 billion, down 20 percent from $48.1 billion in 2015. Of the combined total, 67 percent was from broilers, 17 percent from eggs, 16 percent from turkeys, and less than 1 percent from chickens.
The value of broilers produced during 2016 was $25.9 billion, down 10 percent from 2015. The total number of broilers produced in 2016 was 8.78 billion, up 1 percent from 2015. The total amount of live weight broilers produced in 2016 was 54.3 billion pounds, up 2 percent from 2015.
The value of turkeys produced during 2016 was $6.18 billion, up 8 percent from the $5.71 billion the previous year. The total number of turkeys raised in 2016 was 244 million, up 5 percent from 2015.
Turkey production in 2016 totaled 7.49 billion pounds, up 6 percent from the 7.04 billion pounds produced in 2015.
The value of sales from chickens (excluding broilers) in 2016 was $84.9 million, down 18 percent from $103 million a year ago. The number of chickens sold in 2016 totaled 206 million, up 5 percent from the total sold during the previous year.
Value of all egg production in 2016 was $6.48 billion, down 52 percent from $13.6 billion in 2015. Egg production totaled 102 billion eggs, up 5 percent from 97.2 billion eggs produced in 2015.

Organic Poultry
According to the latest Census of Agriculture (2012) there are 1,065 organic layer farms in the United States that house 9,602,676 laying hens. Wisconsin, California and Iowa are the three states with the most organic layer farms.
There are 267 broiler farms in the United States producing organic broilers and there were 43,238,650 broiler chickens sold as organic according to the 2012 Agriculture Census. Wisconsin, New York and Maine have the most organic broiler production.
Organic turkey production in the United States is practiced on 132 farms. Maine, Washington and Wisconsin being the top three producing states.
